What Every Successful Writer Knows…

What Every Successful Writer Knows...

Purpose. Writing, even journaling or when pursued as a hobby, is a purposeful activity. In your Writing 101 class, you will be taught that there are four reasons to write: narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive. And the professors are correct. Books, newspapers, magazines, journals, even online communications like email, blogs, websites, and social media content can be categorized into one or more of these four 'purposes' to writing.

The reason to write, however, is more than an academic description. To me, the purpose that counts is your WHY. The ultimate goal of writing is to communicate, regardless of how we choose to define the style and type of writing. Communication is the goal. Your ability to clearly say what is in your mind and heart innately creates a connection between you and your reader.  And sharing your message through your words is (or should be) your purpose. Once this is clear in your mind, the mechanics of writing become easy.

As the Writer Success Coach I bring the team together and transform writers into authors. Have you written a book or are about to? Unsure of where to start or what to do next? Do you have questions about the process of writing and publishing? Then your next step is to talk to me (Book a Free Consultation) or perhaps to join the Book Writer Success Boot Camp and learn everything you need to know to get that book ready to publish.

Today’s show is brought to you by the letter “P”. Hi, this is CaZ, the writer success coach. It’s day 9 of the Live video every day in August challenge.

Today I want to recap a bit and share my plan with you! So far, my live video posts have been random and, hopefully, fun and informative. The fun and informative part is going to continue—with a more mindful attitude on my part.

These live videos are going to center around what I call The Three Ps to Writing and Publishing Success: Purposeful, Productive, and Prosperous. We'll expand on these three key elements to writing success over the next few weeks of videos. Successful writers embrace these key concepts in order to meet their writing goals, whatever those goals might be.

As always, I’ll turn some of these videos into blog posts. They will also be on my YouTube channel and shared both on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. You’ll have lots of chances to get this great info and I hope you’ll catch it first here as a FB Live post!

Let’s start today.

With Purpose.

Why do you write?I know you can’t tell me, it’s a one-way video channel. Let’s start a conversation, though. In the comments or in a private message if you prefer, please tell me, why do you write? Give it some thought.

I know that part of being purposeful as a writer is to have a purpose around when you write, what you write, and who you write for. Successful writers have a morning ritual that involves writing. Do you? I do. What’s yours?

To be successful as a writer is personal. It might be you define writing success in financial terms, or perhaps it's as simple for you as leaving a legacy or it might even be part of a lofty goal of changing the world. The first step to success in writing, to YOUR success, is understanding why you write and choosing to create a writing habit. We will talk more about this tomorrow when we discuss why you should (or should not) schedule your writing!

CaZ here, the Writer Success Coach, talking to you about purpose in writing. Keep Writing!

Focus on Your Dream: Anna’s Story

Focus On Your Dream: Anna's Story

This is an episode of my video blog where I share stories, tips, ideas, and quick interviews with guests centered around the ins and outs of writing and publishing. Please watch for the next episode to post and subscribe if you’d like to be notified of future episodes.

Video Transcript:

I was recently talking to a new friend, I’ll call her Anna. She’s a successful business woman in her late 60s. I’m always interested in how and why people choose their career path and I asked her how she came to her profession.

I expected an interesting and perhaps inspiring story of a young woman pursuing her dreams. Instead, I saw a shadow cross her face as in a subdued voice she confided that what she always wanted to do was be an author. To be a published writer of many books.

She told me that, as a young woman pursuing her goal of writing books, she found the field impossible to break into from the small town where she lived. No connections. No resources. This was pre Internet, so certainly none of the indie publishing options open to new writers today were available to her. Even her mentor in college encouraged her to choose a double major in business administration so that she would have a ‘fallback’ career option.

Anna looked up at me, eyes brimming with tears threatening to spill, and assured me that she enjoys her work and is proud to have helped many people over the years, yet she has deep regrets.

She considers herself to be a strong independent woman and cannot believe that she allowed others to talk her out of her dream. Even now, decades later, the regret and even bitterness was evident as she spoke.

Anna’s story reminded me of something my mother told me. When a person tells you not to do something, it’s because they are afraid you will do it, successfully, and better than they could.

We get to choose the path we take in life and it is always possible to change that path. I am so pleased and proud to say that, after more than 50 years, Anna has taken up the pen again. She is writing the first in her series of books.

Anna understands now that it’s important to be true to yourself and follow your dream.

You’ll never regret going after your dream. Will you regret not going? Will you be like Anna and wait 50 years? Or will you start today?

I’d be happy to help. That’s self evident. I have one final question for you today.

If not now, When? IF Not Now, When?

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

We are wired, as humans, to be wary of and resist change. We like to get comfy in our space and live our lives surrounded by what is familiar. And yet, we are also wired with curiosity and a yearning to learn and experience more. Simply more.

Stepping out of our comfort zone is all about reaching for that bit of more. Writers often lead the way because writers ask questions. That's how we explore and expand the topics about which we write. How about you? What possibility do you see just around the corner that is hiding behind your comfy space? Step out and experience the more, whatever that looks like for you.

As the Writer Success Coach I bring the team together and transform writers into authors. Have you written a book or are about to? Unsure of where to start or what to do next? CaZ here, the Writer Success Coach. Wow. Day seven. The end of the challenge. Have you found value in these videos? I hope so. I have absolutely enjoyed bringing these tidbits of my world to you.

I use video every day when I coach writers and meet with my team for book design and publishing. It’s a virtual world and I am comfortable within it. Even so, hosting a virtual meeting is not the same as speaking into the void in hopes that someone is watching.

One of the aspects of my work that I enjoy most is sharing in the joy. I love that aha moment when I coach a writer through the discovery process to find clarity in their subject matter or understanding, perhaps for the first time, why they feel a desire to write. It is great to share in the moments of pure joyful relief that come with successfully completing a first draft.

And nothing compares to handing a new author their book for the first time. These moments and many more throughout the process are why I am willing to look into an empty camera eye to encourage even one more writer to take the leap and step into his or her future as an author. If we are not growing and reaching for more, we are not living fully.

I have decided to continue this series. Not daily, though. I will come to you on Tuesday and Thursday weekly to continue our conversations about writing and publishing and choosing to live a mindful life. And I have one more step forward of my own to take—that’s moving to live video. Time to ride the bike without the training wheels.

How about you? Are you ready to transition into authorship? Then how may I support you today? Perhaps you would like to know more about the Book Writer Success Boot Camp where you follow my proven process to write a book in 90 days.
