Write from a Place of Balance

Balance. Clarity. Giving. These are powerful words that elicit an emotional response. They have power and emotion because in the busy and demanding social world we live in, it is far too easy to be overwhelmed. These words resonate peace and represent an island of calm in a frenetic world.

What does balance look like to you? Are you that rare bird who writes 8, 10, 15 hours a day? That would make you the Dodo bird of writers, if true. Every writer I know of struggles, or at least juggles, to fit writing into a day filled with many other responsibilities. For me, as a writer, coach, and teacher, balance in my life hinges on creating quiet writing time.

How do we find time to write? Simple. Seize the time. Get smart about how we use our time and grab what we need for ourselves. Create writing habits that fit into your life. Get clear about what you want to write and break it down. An entire book is not written in one sitting. Think in terms of 100 words or 1,000 words and you will see clearly that it's easy to steal moments throughout the day.

Get up early or stay up late. Give yourself fifteen or twenty minutes at the start or end of the day to write. Do you write better with a keyboard? Pen and paper? Keep devices handy that will let you scribble down sentences easily wherever you are. And don't overlook talking. Technology can be your friend when it comes to writing.

Writing is a choice. We choose to cook at  home or eat out. We choose to watch a re-run on TV or go to a newly released film. We choose to walk on the beach or do something productive. Choose to create a writing habit that fits your life. AND make it a priority. The opportunities to write exist--it is up to you to see them and snatch up those precious minutes or hours.

How will you make time for writing in your busy life?

CaZ here, the Writer Success Coach. It’s day 6 of the video challenge and I nearly missed it. Why? Because I chose to take a break. There is really no sense to live at the beach and watch the beautiful days of summer roll by through a window. The next to last item on my list was this video and I chose the pool.

And do you know what? I would do it again. Because balance is important in life. Ying and Yang. Work and Play. Laughter and Tears.

As a writer there’s an additional element that becomes part of the balance mixture. I call it quiet write time. Some call it a muse. Regardless of the name, having it is critical to a writer.

I have always admired journalists because they have a knack for getting the story and writing it fast. For most writers, however, writing the story fast is not the goal. The goal is telling the story with heart and clarity. The goal is to move the reader. To elicit the laughter or the tears. To invoke love or jealousy or angst or any of hundreds of emotions.

Writers write because we have to, yes. It’s something we do and really can’t help ourselves. But what many don’t realize is that most writers write for YOU, not for themselves. It is the reader we have clearly in our minds when we write. It is you whose emotion we want to spark, whose interest we want to pique. It is you whose praise and approval we crave.

What have you done today to find your balance? What will you do? One of the keys to writing a book in 90 days, as I teach in the Writer Success Boot Camp, is adjusting your balance between work and life to include writing. I’ll post a link to the boot camp in the comment.

Let’s talk more about taking the kind of breaks that fill you up with the energy to write! Join me in the Book Writer Success Boot Camp and let’s write a book together!
