Let's Have Fun with Writing Prompts!

Every writer creates her own writing habits. One part of your habit should include using writing prompts. Why, you ask? You like using prompts about as much as eating spinach? Well, I happen to love spinach, but that's a different topic. Prompts, whether appealing or not, serve a real purpose and have value to you as a writer.

Here a few good reasons why you should use prompts in your writing.

  • Warm up and stretch are an important part of exercising muscles. Your brain is a muscle. Warm up your creativity with a bit of exercise.
  • It's an inexplicable fact that, even though most of what you write from a prompt will be discarded, when you reread what you wrote you will discover gems buried in the garble.
  • Perfection will never be in your writing future, but regular practice will improve your work. Prompts are usually "throw-away" writing. You just tossed words onto the page in a 10 minute exercise. Who cares if you have to rewrite it? Pull the ideas and inspired phrases out and move forward. Train your brain to produce ideas and throw them on the page. The best way to practice is by doing prompts.
  • Do you think out loud sometimes? Then apply the same logic to your writing and use prompts to think on paper. The act of writing, of thinking on paper, engages more senses. You will see the words, feel the action of typing or moving the pen across the page. You will even hear the words in your mind as they are formed. Broadening your sensory input boosts your creativity which in turn boosts your creative output.

Writing prompts make us look at our writing, our lives, and our world and question what we say, think, and write about. Writing prompts encourage us to look at the why behind those answers. ANd of course, Why? and What If? are two of the most powerful and inspirational questions a writer can ask--and answer.

CaZ here, the Writer Success Coach. Who wants to have some fun? I’d like to share an activity with you that we do in my Free Facebook group, The Writer Exchange. It’s really simple and fun, even if you are not a writer. It fuels your imagination and that’s always a good thing!

It works like this. I have 5 prompts that I’ve prepared. Simple, declarative sentences that you may choose to finish. In any way you want. Be outrageous. Be funny. Be sad. Relax and have fun with your imagination.

Choose one or all. Write your response in the comments if you want to share. Or copy and paste the prompt and write a response for yourself elsewhere.

Ready? Here’s the first one!

    • She could smell gas even before she opened the door...
    • The text message simply said, very clever...
    • Half the names on the list had already been crossed off...
    • Amongst her mother's possessions, she found...
    • He was at a crossroads. Whichever path he chose would ruin someone's life...

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
